My first 5k race!

This past March, I ran my first *serious* 5k as part of the Inverness Half Marathon festival. As a beginner, I was equal parts nervous and excited - I'd never run an organised 5k race before, and this was the first time I’d be running with a proper crowd. To make it even more special, it was Mother’s Day, and my mum was waiting for me at the finish line, cheering me on. No pressure, right?

The weather couldn’t have been better. March in the Highlands can be hit or miss, but we got lucky: the sun was shining, there was a gentle breeze, and it wasn’t too cold. Ideal conditions for running, especially for someone like me who’s still getting used to racing.

From the start, I could feel the buzz of the festival atmosphere. There was a friendly mix of serious runners, families, and other beginners like me, and that made it feel welcoming instead of intimidating. My only goal was to get through the race without stopping and to do my best to enjoy it.

I set off at a comfortable pace, making sure not to go out too fast - something I’d learned the hard way in training doing Couch to 5k! As we wound our way through the streets of Inverness, I focused on keeping my breathing steady and finding my rhythm. The crowd was a fantastic motivator; locals lined the course, clapping and shouting encouragement, which made it feel like the whole town had come out to support us. It’s funny how seeing a random stranger cheer you on can give you a little boost when you’re starting to flag.

The highlight of the race was definitely the finish. The last stretch took us around the running track at the Aquadome, and as soon as I stepped onto that red track surface, something in me switched. There was a small crowd around the track, and hearing the cheers and seeing the finish line in sight gave me a final burst of energy. I pushed myself, and crossed the line with a new personal best - 32 minutes and 23 seconds! For someone who had never run 5k in a race before, it felt like a massive achievement.

My mum was right there waiting, arms open, and we shared a big hug as I caught my breath. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate Mother’s Day. It was a perfect mix of a personal challenge and a community celebration, and I’m already excited for the next one.

A PB, sunshine, and a proud mum at the end - what more could I have asked for?
